Red Bull team boss Christian Horner believes the FIA is taking the wrong approach to solving the porpoise problem some teams are facing.
The FIA has issued a technical guidance stating it will seek to “define a metric based on the vehicle’s vertical acceleration that will provide a quantitative limit for an acceptable level of vertical vibration”. While the exact mathematical formula for this metric is still being analyzed, teams could be directed by the FIA to take action in the future and Horner doesn’t think that’s the right solution to the problem.
“The FIA - you can understand that safety is their main concern but to drop a technical directive like this just before the weekend without consultation… it just feels wrong to go about things,” Horner told Sky Sports. “I think there needs to be proper consultation with the experts. A solution can be found.
“Giving the FIA the right to set your rear ride height and set-up before a race is a very dangerous thing. What happens if the wind changes during the race? Based on the baseline they provided, what happens if the porpoise gets worse for some reason?
“So it’s the metric [and method of measuring it] Application of this regulation – this needs to be discussed. The intent is all well and good, but it wasn’t implemented properly.”
While it’s widely believed that Red Bull will benefit more from the technical guideline than Ferrari and Mercedes – who have visibly jumped more than the leaders – Horner says it’s not fair to apply something to all teams.
“There are so many things they could do that would just be easier. For example, glue a larger board on top. That would lift the cars off the ground. Trying to mitigate, judging between one car and another… maybe we benefit, maybe not; I have no idea.
“But it seems like a very complicated way to solve a problem. It’s not an issue that affects all teams. I think the conclusion should be up to the teams to sort it out. There are a set of rules that are consistent for everyone there.”
