ALTON, Va. (June 16, 2022) – History has shown that the Fast Track Racing BMW M4 G4 sportscars with Pirelli GT4 America overall and class wins on the fast 3.27 mile, 17 corner street circuit were a very good match for VIRginia International Raceway.
And the Texas-based team, sponsored by Sewell Automotive Companies, returns to the popular Southern Virginia circuit this weekend (June 17-19) for Rounds 5 and 6, with two strong entries in the 60- minute doubleheader with two drivers GT4 America race events are scheduled for Saturday at 4:05 p.m. EDT and Sunday at 10:55 a.m. EDT.
The two-driver GT4 America lineup for Fast Track Racing at VIR will have the duo of paraplegic racer Tim Horrell of Coral Springs, FL and multiple sportscar champion Raphael Mata of Bota Raton, FL at the #10 Fast Track BMW M4 GT4 racing sports car and former GT4 America champion Greg Liefooghe from San Francisco, California, and Damon Surzyshyn from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, in the BMW M4 GT4 No. 11 “Going Pro – SRO America”.
Fast Track Racing team manager Toby Grahovec, a multiple race winner at VIR, says his contingent gives VIR solid confidence this weekend with the BMW’s performances so far, but the competition has been extremely strong back in 2022.
“In the past we had good performances with our BMW M4 sports cars at the VIR,” said Grahovec. “And all of our fast track racing drivers are big fans of VIR as a racing facility. I know I’ve always liked the track and we hope to continue our team’s success in GT4 racing this weekend. This track gives the BMW more than the first two circuits in SRO America this year, but the GT4 America field is so strong this year. We need a good performance to get on the podium (top three).”
Matos, the former Indy Lights champion from Brazil, loves the VIR track and expects the BMW to compete in both Pirelli GT4 America GT4 features this weekend.
“VIR is one of my favorite tracks in the US,” said Matos. “We expect our car to be competitive there as there are a lot of long acceleration zones. Tim also really likes this track and does a lot of laps there. The goal is to get Tim to qualify up front and hand the car over to me in a good position so I can finish the job.”
Horrell, who uses hand controls in his race car, has shown outstanding speed in his debut season in the Pirelli GT4 America campaign and is ready to race at a track he is very familiar with from his racing career.
“Yeah, I can’t wait to get to the VIR circuit this weekend,” said Tim. “The BMW M4 has been strong in GT4 at VIR for many years and I hope it stays that way for us. I know Rafa is excited about the VIR and
we could use a weekend full of podiums. I know the Fast Track Racing guys have been working hard to prepare the race cars.”
Two-time GT4 America Series Champion Liefooghe is a veteran of both the VIR track and the BMW M4 GT4 machine and is hoping Fast Track Racing’s winning streak will continue this weekend with his No. 11 race car and partner Surzyshyn.
“VIR is at the top of my list of favorite tracks along with Watkins Glen so I always look forward to racing there,” said Greg. “It will be interesting to see how we do with this bizarre BOP (Balance of Performance). Hopefully the Fast Track Racing guys will work their magic and give us a car that will be able to compete in the front. I know that their BMW M4s have been very fast in the past.”
Surzyshyn comes to VIR with added enthusiasm, knowing the Fast Track Racing Team’s past successes at the Virginia facility and hoping the BMW M4 will be strong in the two 60-minute races.
“I love the VIR track,” said Surzyshyn. “As a Canadian, the area with the trees reminds me of Banff. The scenery is spectacular and the track is so much fun to drive. I know Fast Track Racing has had great success in the past with the BMW M4 and TC cars. I hope Greg and I can continue that record with a solid weekend. I am very happy to return to VIR.”
Fast Track Racing also entered three TCX BMW M2 CS (Cup) cars (Jacob Ruud, Garrett Adams and Olivia Askew) in TC America competition to VIR along with the two Pirelli GT4 America entries to VIR.
Practice laps are scheduled for Friday at 12:00 p.m. EDT and 5:15 p.m. EDT with qualifying on Saturday at 10:40 p.m. EDT. Race 1 is scheduled for Saturday at 4:05 p.m. EDT, with Race 2 on Sunday at 10:55 a.m. EDT.
Pirelli GT4 America highlights will be shown on CBS Sports Network on Sunday, June 16 at 12:00 p.m. EDT, with an additional presentation that evening at 10:00 p.m. EDT.
