How to redeem a promotional code in the Google Play Store

Earlier this year, Google introduced promo codes for apps in the Google Play Store. This is an incredibly cool feature that allows developers to give away copies of their apps for free using text code. This feature has been available on iOS for quite some time now. We used it to share free copies of apps generously given away by developers. Now that promo codes for Android apps are available, you might be wondering how the code works and how to redeem it. Here’s a short description of how to redeem a code from both desktop and the Google Play Store app on Android.

If you’ve ever used an iOS promo code, you know that all you need to do is hit the “Redeem” button at the bottom of the App Store app, enter the code or scan it, and your app will be installed. This does not work in the Google Play Store. First you need to go to the app the promo code is for and only when you click to install it will you be able to redeem the code.

Navigate to the app for which you want to redeem the code. The app will obviously have a price tag. Click the “Buy” button and wait until it asks you to select a payment method. Open the drop-down menu of the payment method and you will see the “Redeem” option. Click on it and enter the promo code when prompted.

If the code is accepted, the price of the app will be crossed out on the next screen, where the Play Store will ask you to select the device you want to install the app on. Click Install and you’re done.

Activate app promo code – Android

Open the Google Play Store app and find the app you want to download. Click the price button and grant the app all the permissions it asks for. You will then be prompted to click the “Buy” button. Instead of clicking on it right away, open the price drop-down menu and tap the “Redeem” option. Enter the code and click Redeem. The application will be installed on your device.

The process is simple enough, although there is no need to force the user to visit the app itself to redeem the code.
