is the insurance sector mobilizing?

This is a message that caught our attention recently: an Internet user who took in a Ukrainian couple was looking for car insurance to allow them to travel legally. To facilitate the reception of refugees who have chosen exile in France, the federation of insurers has recently put in place several measures. For their part, the bancassurances present in Russia have chosen to give up their activity.

More than 4 million refugees have left Ukraine

According to a count by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the number of Ukrainians who have left their country since February 24 (the date of the Russian invasion) has exceeded the bar of 4 million at the end of March. These are mainly women and children.

More than half of these refugees have found temporary asylum in Poland, which has already received more than 2.3 million people. The other main host countries are also bordering Ukraine: Romania has received more than 600,000 refugees, Moldova and Hungary nearly 400,000 and Slovakia 300,000.

In comparison, the reception of Ukrainian nationals in countries further west remains limited for the moment. In France, according to counts which also date from the end of March, 26,000 refugees have crossed the borders of France. By that date, about a third (10,500 people) had received temporary residence permit under the temporary protection offered by the EU to Ukrainians fleeing the war.

Insurance offered by France insurers

However, for these exiles, the majority of whom left the country by car, an administrative constraint was imposed on arrival in France: the obligation of insurance for vehicles. To alleviate the problem, France insurers (ex FFA) announced last week that people benefiting from temporary EU protection could be insured free of charge for civil liability.

The insurance certificate can be obtained directly from any customs office, and is valid for one month, renewable once, until June 30, 2022. One way for the President of France Assureur, Florence Lustman to ” contribute to [l’] reception in France [des réfugiés] in the best possible conditions. »

In the same vein, as of March, France Assureurs had planned a system to cover Ukrainians who had found refuge in French homes. Until the end of the year, the ” host families “ can benefit from an extension of the civil liability and defence-recourse guarantees to the refugees accommodated under their roof (as if a relative were added to the MRH contract).

Retreat from Russia

More recently, another announcement also testified to the mobilization of the sector in favor of the Ukrainian people: the Societe Generale announced this week that it was ceasing its banking and insurance activities in Russia.

Its Russian subsidiary Rosbank (which uses the same well-known black and red logo of Société Générale) as well as the insurance entities will be sold to Interros Capital, the holding company of an oligarch close to Vladimir Putin who was already the main shareholder. of the bank before the arrival of the French group in 2006.

A little earlier, two other French bancassurances had also chosen to leave the Russian ship: Agricultural credit and BNP Paribasaware of the financial and image risks to which they were exposed.
