The annual celebration of dads and vintage cars, a long-standing, landmark Father’s Day event in the Ohio Valley, has been on hold since the COVID-19 pandemic slowed public gatherings two years ago.

This year’s event, hosted by the Maynard Sportsman Club, is ready to rev up the engine to get back in shape and give a great start to the summer season.

“We hope to have a good turnout this year,” said Howard Stoner, president of the Maynard Sportsman Club.

Stoner noted that in the past, local auto clubs have helped spearhead the auto cruise. This year, however, the Sportsman Club is sponsoring the cruise, which is judged by laypeople.

Registration for classic car, truck and bike owners will take place at Maynard Ballfield on Sunday from 10am to 2pm. The entrance fee is $6. Pre 1989 cars, trucks and motorcycles will be judged. Prizes will be awarded at 4:00pm in the Ladies Choice, Park Choice, 3 Bikes, Best of Show and Top 20 categories.

While the car cruise is always a local favorite for participating classic vehicle owners, the event itself is a local favorite for those who enjoy celebrating Father’s Day by spending time with loved ones.

Once a booming coal mining town, Maynard is now a quiet residential neighborhood in the Wheeling Creek Valley north of St. Clairsville at Belmont County Road 5. Aside from American Legion baseball games and family reunions at Maynard Ballfield, the annual Father’s Day celebration is among the few events draw the fanfares into the city.

The Maynard Father’s Day Classic Car, Truck and Bike Show marks the 24th annual event this year and is also one of the few – if not the only – traditional Father’s Day event held each year in the Ohio Valley.

As long-time fans of the event will attest, great dads and classic cars have a lot in common – they may be old, but their vintage characteristics usually exhibit qualities that are immeasurably admirable.

The relaxed atmosphere of the Maynard Father’s Day car show is always full of “dad vibes”.

During the Sunday event, a DJ will spin oldies from the 1950s and a range of traditional dishes will be available for purchase.

“We’re going to be cooking 130 chicken dinners and about the same amount of rib dinners on Sunday,” Stoner said, noting that there will also be hamburgers, hot dogs, sides, drinks and more. “People were happy to hear we were bringing it back. We are looking forward; it will be a lot of fun.”

A 50/50 draw and door prizes will also be available during the event. The show opens to the public on Sunday, June 19 from 12pm to 4pm.
