Taking out young driver car insurance typically requires a higher financial outlay than a standard contract. Did you recently get your driver’s license? Some tricks can allow you to pay less. Discover the essentials to remember about the price of “young driver” car insurance.

What is young driver car insurance?

A car insurance called “young driver” is a contract designed for people who have recently obtained their driving licence.

The category of young drivers is defined in particular by article A121-1-1 of the Insurance Code, and includes all motorists whose driving license has less than three years (source: this should be added the category of more experienced drivers, but who have not been covered by any auto insurance contract for at least three years.

Beyond addressing a specific audience, the “young driver” car insurance contract does not differ significantly from a standard formula for an older driver. In particular, it is possible to access different levels of guarantee and to compare the offers of several insurers to select the most competitive.

Why is young driver insurance more expensive?

The main feature of a “young driver” car insurance policy is its higher cost. All other things being equal, an insured who recently held the permit will pay significantly more than someone who has been insured for ten or twenty years.

To take account of the young driver’s inexperience, an additional insurance premium is applied systematically. If the insured has taken a standard driving license course, this additional premium is capped at: (source:

  • 100% of the basic premium for the first year after obtaining the licence;
  • 50% of the base premium for the second year;
  • 25% of the base premium for the third year.

If he acquires and insures a vehicle as soon as he obtains his licence, a young driver must therefore expect to pay the double the standard rate for its class of vehicle!

To this should be added the effect of bonus-penalty coefficient: at the start of his motorist “career”, the driver indeed starts with a coefficient of 1. He must then be exemplary on the road and not cause any responsible accident for 13 years to reach the maximum bonus , i.e. 0.50.

In the end, the young driver is therefore likely to pay four times more for his car insurance than an older driver and already at the maximum bonus!

A higher accident rate among young drivers

The dissuasive rates of “young driver” car insurance contracts are explained by the greater probability of causing a responsible, and sometimes dramatic, accident. According to Road Safety, 59% of fatal accident victims are between the ages of 18 and 24. The additional premium therefore compensates for the greater risk assumed by the insurer.

What are the guarantees for “young driver” car insurance?

The contracts and options available for young driving license holders do not differ significantly from more traditional formulas. Three main categories of offers are available:

  • Third-party “young driver” insurance: this constitutes the minimum protection made compulsory by law. It only consists of a civil liability guarantee: the driver will not be reimbursed for the damage suffered by his own vehicle, but his insurer guarantees any damage he may cause to others.
  • Extended third-party “young driver” insurance: it adds some more protective guarantees, the nature of which varies from one contract to another. This may include compensation for fire, explosion, glass breakage, vandalism or theft.
  • All-risk “young driver” insurance: this is the most comprehensive formula. It typically includes all the guarantees mentioned above, but also others such as 24-hour assistance or even personal guarantee for bodily injury to the insured, even in the event of an accident at fault.

As a general rule, a young driver acquires his first vehicle on the second-hand market, and chooses an older model with a low residual value. Under these conditions, it seems more advantageous and rational to choose third-party insurance in order to minimize the amount of your premium.
