Toyota bZ4X EV, other models could expand the GR performance portfolio

  • The Toyota bZ4X could get Gazoo Racing’s performance treatment, its chief engineer said Move electrically.
  • Toyota teased the bZ4X GR Sport concept at the Tokyo Auto Show, and more GR models are expected.
  • Even the Toyota Camry could be in line for a GR variant, as reported by earlier this month engine trend.

Toyota’s motorsport division, Gazoo Racing, is currently responsible for several exciting models including the GR86 and GR Supra sports cars. With the much-anticipated GR Corolla, a 300hp, 4WD, manual-only version of the regular Corolla, Gazoo showed it can transform ordinary models into exciting creations. Now word on the road is that the newly launched Toyota bZ4X – an electric crossover – could get the GR treatment.

Daisuke Ido, the chief engineer of the bZ4X, said recently Move electrically that a performance version is indeed being considered and that it would be tuned by the Gazoo Racing team. Ido’s comments come after Toyota unveiled the bZ4X GR Sport concept at the Tokyo Auto Show in January. At the time, its blacked-out appearance and larger rims were the only clues it wasn’t a standard-issue bZ4X, which in its most powerful form features a dual-engine, all-wheel-drive configuration producing 214 and 248 pound-feet of torque . Otherwise, there were no technical details about the bZ4X GR Sport.

However, since that concept was shown, the Lexus RZ was unveiled. Running on the same e-TNGA platform as the bZ4X, its more powerful 308hp twin-motor powertrain could easily move into a potential GR bZ4X. Still, Ido said the decision to create a GR bZ4X would require more than just more powerful electric motors. Instead, he said it must handle and perform at a level that Gazoo Racing’s customers have come to expect. If it can live up to those expectations, it would be the first electric vehicle and crossover to bear the GR badge.

The proliferation of new GR models in Toyota’s portfolio doesn’t seem to be limited to sports cars and hot hatches. Along with a potential performance version of the bZ4X, perhaps the Camry could be on deck for such an overhaul. Speak with engine trend Earlier this month, Toyota executive vice president of sales Bob Carter didn’t rule out a possible GR Camry when asked if Gazoo Racing would make a sedan. “Hold on,” he said. We should.
