Since 2015, the Hamon law has allowed all car and motorcycle drivers to terminate their insurance at any time, after one year of contract. A real plus since consumers can now compete. Since 1er January 2021, a few new things have appeared in the auto insurance sector. Back to school can be synonymous with changes, particularly budgetary, here are the main changes for 2021 to help you find the best offer.
1. Frozen rates
In 2020, car insurance, like motorcycle, had caused ink to flow. Due to the containment measures of that year, claims had reduced considerably. As a result, the policyholders and more particularly the insurers realized savings, since few car guarantees were requested. According to a UFC Que Choisir study, based on different scenarios, the association estimated that insurance companies had made savings ranging from 1.4 billion to 2.3 billion euros.
Yet that same year, some insurers increased their rates, provoking strong reactions among the population. In 2021, some insurers have chosen to freeze their prices, such as Matmut, MAIF, Crédit Mutuel Arkéa, AGPM (General Military Provident Association). The GMF has announced the freezing of its prices for contracts expiring between 1er April 2021 and March 31, 2022. Generally from one year to the next, contributions increase between 1.5% and 3.4%.
2. Reduced premiums for electric cars
2021 may be the perfect year to acquire an electric vehicle. Since July 26, 2021, the conditions for the ecological bonus have changed to promote the purchase of an electric car or van. In addition to this aid, the finance law has announced that electric cars are exempt the special tax on insurance agreements (TSCA).
To be exempt, the registration certificate (the gray card) must be dated between 1er January 2021 and December 31, 2023. The objective is to encourage more French people to turn to a more ecological vehicle. Knowing that the amount of this tax represents 33% compulsory civil liability, the insured can benefit from significant savings over one year. This measure also aims to push insurers towards more environmentally oriented pricing policies.
3. The arrival of new insurers
The auto insurance market has diversified considerably in recent years. The French can each find their account. 2021 sees the arrival of new companies, enough to make the market more competitive. Société Générale Assurance has, for example, set up car insurance with decreasing prices for eco-driving behavior. Ornikar, known for its online driving training, has also ventured into insurance by offering attractive rates.
