When sneaker designers meet electric sports cars

THE designer and influencer Sean Wotherspoon stands for fashionable streetwear with a lively color palette and unusual materials. Together with Porsche, the 32-year-old designed his very own Taycan 4 Cross Turismo.

Wotherspoon first made a name for himself with the Nike Air Max 97/1 sneaker he created in 2018. In addition to the design, the use of corduroy as the upper material, which has become Wotherspoon’s trademark, was unusual. He has been working with Adidas since 2020. In 2013 he opened the first Round Two Store in the USA, a vintage shop for streetwear and sneakers. The designer and influencer has previously worked with Porsche on The Art of Drive, an interactive online mentoring program that invites celebrities to share through a series of short films, articles and interviews how they are achieving their dreams while helping others People have inspired and digital events.

Only recently, Porsche showed the interior of the art car for the first time: The lively color blocking continues with Nash Blue, Sean Peach, Loretta Purple and Ashley Green. Cork on the instrument panel, steering wheel and center console creates a visual contrast, while corduroy adds another special feature. The headlining, center seat panels and sun visors are covered with the same fabric in Atacama Beige. The staunch vegan also wanted the interior to be leather-free, an option that other Taycan customers can also choose.

“Creativity thrives on interaction,” says Michael Mauer, Head of Style at Porsche. “As a designer, it’s important to question everything and have the aspiration to keep looking at ideas anew. Working with young designers like Sean helps us to gain new impulses from very different product areas.”

“When I look at something, I examine how I can change it and take it to a new level,” says Wotherspoon. “These questions are my personal challenge. It doesn’t matter whether I’m working on a sneaker or car design, a workflow, sustainability issues or a new material. Striving for innovation drives me, and the extraordinary has fascinated me from the start Materials that the Porsche designers in Weissach work with. We kept inspiring each other throughout the project and ultimately created a whole new way of vehicle design.”

The partnership was initiated by a marketing communications team at Porsche. The communication experts brought Wotherspoon together with the Style Porsche designers and organized the world premiere of the car on Instagram together with him. Wotherspoon visited the Porsche Design Studio in Weissach several times. He also oversaw the physical creation of his art car on site and spent time in the concept car workshop and body shop in Weissach.

Initially, virtual reality technologies were used to try out and discuss many of the exterior color options on a model car. “Inspired by a visit to the Porsche Museum, Sean came up with the idea for circular elements on the doors,” recalls Volker Müller, Head of Color and Trim at Style Porsche. “His idea takes up the start number range of historic racing cars. At the same time, this inverted color breaks up the large area.”

To ensure the colors were exactly what he wanted, Wotherspoon sent the appropriate Pantone reference codes to Porsche. These were recreated on the mixing bench in the paint shop of the shop floor for concept cars and the colors were then applied to so-called “paint frogs” so that the sneakerhead could look at them personally and professionally assess them under a range of different conditions. The light cabin in the Porsche Design Studio can switch between daylight and artificial light at the push of a button.

The unusual names of the colors have a personal background. “After we explained the importance of unique names, Sean named the colors after members of his family,” says Volker Müller. This is how Nash Blue, Sean Peach, Loretta Purple and Ashley Green came about.

The idea is that the interior continues the colour-blocking concept of the exterior. Corduroy and cork, which he also uses for his streetwear, were the materials Wotherspoon wanted. Corduroy has a long tradition at the sports car manufacturer. The soft, ribbed material adorned the seat centers of the Porsche 356 as early as 1952. This fabric in Atacama beige was added to the new Artcar, which Porsche used in the 911 Targa 4S Heritage Edition in 2020. “Working with cork presented our trimmers with a number of challenges,” says Müller. Finally, the laminated material, supplied on rolls, had to be adapted to complex shapes like the dashboard.

The Taycan 4 Cross Turismo designed by Wotherspoon is rounded off by elements from Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur. These include the 21-inch wheels in Cross Turismo design and the rear wiper cover – both painted in black (high-gloss) – as well as the light strip with the Porsche logo in black. Customers can implement similar projects as part of the Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur special request program, a reinterpretation of the legendary service of the same name from the late 1970s, which was launched in 2021. An example is the ‘Paint to Sample Plus’ option to allow for the four exterior colors of Wotherspoon’s colour-blocked exterior to be offered in the future.

As an all-rounder among electric sports cars, the Taycan Cross Turismo has all the strengths of the Taycan, such as superior performance and an impressive range, plus there is more headroom for the rear passengers and a maximum trunk volume of more than 1,200 liters. The standard all-wheel drive chassis with air suspension is height-adjustable. The off-road design elements include wheel arch trims, distinctive underparts at the front and rear, and side skirts.
