Diesel engines are excellent for towing, hauling and generally produce more torque than their petrol engine counterparts. Some of the best trucks that any American manufacturer makes are the big 2500 heavy duty trucks with diesel engines. And everyone has their own brand of oil burners that are as much a part of their brand as bow ties, blue ovals and horns. But which diesel truck is the fastest?

These trucks aren’t fast. Or fast. Compared to sports cars and the new EV trucks like the GMC Hummer EV and Rivian R1T, big diesel 2500 trucks aren’t going to make ground anytime soon. They’re four-ton pickups, after all. They will all tow more than 30,000 pounds with ease, carry five or six adults comfortably and have a payload capacity of more than two Toyota Camrys. But they are not fast. While sports cars today (and EV trucks) are getting closer and closer to the 10 second mark in a ¼ mile, large trucks are lucky to be in the 16 second range. But in a quarter-mile drag race, the team at TFL Truck found one had the upper hand.

3) 2022 Ram 2500 HD with Cummins: 17:05 in the quarter mile
The 2022 Ram 2500 HD continues to build on Ram’s resurgence with exceptionally beautiful interiors that are comfortable places to linger. The Cummins diesel brand is also one of the most traditional in the truck world. But it’s not the fastest, at least in this test. The Ram 2500 HD covered the distance in 17:05. But it had the top speed by the end of the run at 87.8mph, suggesting it was generating more power than traction early in the run. The Cummins V8 in Rams can produce up to 1,075 pound-feet of torque, which is amazing, but it’s mated to an old-school six-speed transmission.

2) 2022 Chevy Silverado HD with Duramax: 16:52 on the quarter mile
The Chevy Silverado 2500Hd with the Duramax 6.6L V8 is an impressive truck. In the TFL video you can see that he is the fastest of the big three trucks on the first try. The Duramax diesel puts out an incredible 910 pound-feet of torque and can tow more than 36,000 pounds. While it ran a quarter mile in 16.52 seconds at 86.9 mph, it was unclear from the video if the TFL guys drove it with the optional Z71 off-road package, which has larger wheels and tires.
1) 2022 Ford F-250 with Power Stroke: 16:05 in the quarter mile
The Ford F-250 with the Power Stroke turbodiesel recently joined the club with over 1,000 pound-feet of torque, and with that diesel it can tow up to 37,000 pounds and carry 7,850 payloads. Sure it’s capable. In the drag race, TFL found that the numbers resulted in the Ford being the fastest, running the quarter mile in 16:05 at 84.1 mph. The Ford isn’t the lightest, but it has the most horsepower and torque. In this case the numbers don’t lie and the Ford is the fastest diesel truck, at least according to TFL.
